with

Seashells

Top with sea shell and red crab

Materials:

1. a glass jar lid that matches your glass jar
2. sea shells
3. sand
4. a bottle of Elmer's Glue-All or equivalent
5. a can of polyurethane - gloss or semi-gloss
6. set of hobby brushes

1 Preparing the glass jar lid

Wash the glass jar lid with soap and water. Then wipe it dry with a towel, cloth or paper. This should remove any grime and oils. Set aside and let completely air dry.

Always examine your glass jar lid for cracks or other damage. I highly recommend that you do not use cracked or damaged glass jar lids.

2. Laying out a Design for your decorative glass jar lid

Take a look at the glass jar lid. Check the size of the jar lid. You need to be familiar with the jar lid to set up the design to use on it.

Set a seashell and perhaps a piece of coral, or a crab (like on the first lid shown here) on the glass jar lid to get an idea for how they can look once you start setting them up permantly.

Now that you have an idea for how the shells will sit on the lid lets get started laying them on. Use the photo above to help you.

3. Starting the decorative glass jar lid design

Pick, glue, and place the largest shell of your picks on top of the glass jar lid. If you are using a piece of coral, glue that in place also. Let the glue dry.

Now get ready to apply the sand by placing some clean and dry newspaper on your work surface. This paper will catch the sand that falls off your decorative glass jar lid project.

Apply glue to the top of the lid where the glass is showing and use a hobby brush to spread the glue around so it covers all of the exposed glass on the top. Try not to get glue on the sides of the lid where you will be gripping it. Pour sand over the glue, let it all sit for a minute or two, then lightly shake off the excess. Return the excess sand to your container.

4. Finishing the Decorative glass jar lid

Place your crab on the lid where you had figured to put it previously. Once your sure that's where you want to place it, pick it up and apply glue to the crab. Place the crab in place. Let it dry.

Now you can add a few more small shells, a small rock, a pearl, or some other accessories that you would like to place. Glue them into place and wait for everything to dry.

After its all dry, cover the shells and sand with a coat of polyurethane. Then return to the Decorative Jars page and start a jar project.
