Shellcraft Seashell Magnets Project 4 - Angel
Create seashell magnets in an "Angel" pattern by following along with the instructions of this Shellcraft project.
Materials you will need:
* a magnet (business card size magnet shown)
* 8 seashells
* sand, beach sand if possible
* glue, white all purpose
* a couple of hobby paint brushes
* polyurethane clear high gloss or semi-gloss liquid
Use at least a 2" x 3 ½" business card magnet for this shellcraft seashell magnet project. They can be found in office supply stores. The magnets usually have a paper backing over a glued surface, just remove the paper backing before using. Use the sticky surface for the design.
Go through your seashell collection and look for seashells that will give you the pattern shown or a close copy of it. I used a simple clamshells I found on one of my beachcombing expeditions for the head. Turkey arks form the angel's wings, and 5 bubble seashells make up the legs, arms, and body.
Apply glue to the magnet on the non-magnetic side. Spread it around with the paintbrush until the whole surface of the magnet is covered. I use white all-purpose glue because I need the glue to remain wet for a few minutes while placing the shellcraft angel design on the surface of the magnet.
Start at the top, placing the 2 turkey seashells. Set them so they angle from the center upwards toward the magnet's edge. Place the clam seashell above the "wings" in the center. Place the bubble shell you have picked to be the body. Put the 2 arm seashells near the top of the body, pointing away from the body. Put 2 more angling away from center underneath the body of this seashell magnet.
Give the seashells and their placement a quick once over to assure they are in the position you want them to be. Move them if they are not. Sprinkle sand over the whole seashell project. Cover the glue that is still showing, then set aside until the glue is dry.
Remove the loose sand by upending the magnet. If you did the project on a piece of paper, you can easily gather up the loose sand and save it for future Shellcraft projects.
To protect this seashell craft, use a hobby paintbrush to apply polyurethane over the seashells and sand. If you use gloss or semi-gloss polyurethane it will give the seashells and sand a bright and shiny look.
Once the paint is dry, you are ready to enjoy your seashell magnet craft. At home you can place it on the refrigerator. If you take it to work, a metal filing cabinet will hold the little bit of art nicely. Anything the magnet is attracted to will do.
