Materials
1. an unwanted CD or DVD
2. 13 seashells
3. 1 rhinestones
4. sand
5. white, all purpose glue
6. fishing line
7. small paint brushes
Pick out a CD/DVD for Your Shell Craft
What CD (compact disc) do you have lying around that you can use for this project? Remember, once you use a CD (DVD)to make a compact disc craft you will not be able to listen or watch it again. Do you have CDs that have stopped working, un-solicited promotional CDs received in the mail, or just one you no longer care for? The unwanted one is the one to use for your CD craft projects.
You can also use blank CD/DVDs that can be bought at just about any store, internet or physical. Since you're going to cover it up with seashells and sand buy low cost discs.
Drill the Hanging Hole
To hang the compact disc craft you are making, you'll need to make a hole near the edge. There are many ways to make the hole but the easiest is with a drill. You can use a drill press, a hand drill or rotary tool. The bit should be about 1/8".
Remember to protect your work surface by holding the part of the CD to be drilled over the edge of the table. You could also place a piece of scrap wood under the CD before drilling the hole.
Place the hole about ¼" from the edge of the CD. This hole can also be used as a guide for laying out the seashells and rhinestone. Put the long part, or stem, of the flower in-line with the hole.
Pick Out the Seashells & Accessories
As pointed out in the material's list you'll need some seashells and a rhinestone for your compact disc craft. Pick out 13 clam style seashells (see the photo). The seashells I used to form the flower are about 1/2 inch across. The rhinestone is about a 3/8" in diameter. Lay the seashells you picked on the CD without glue and check how they fit, then adjust as needed. It is important that the center clam style seashell cover the center hole in the CD.
Do a dry run before setting everything in place permanently, since natural seashells vary in size, shape, and coloration. This will give you a chance to check out the design to make sure you like it. Just move the seashells around until you like what you see. Once you have a design that you like, move the design off to the side of the CD where it is easy to get to.
Apply the Seashells
One way is to apply a thin layer of glue to the surface of the compact disc craft. Place the seashells in place following the design. You should start with the seashell going over the center hole, and then place the others to make the stem. These seashells should align with the hole you drilled.
Place the "flower" seashells in a circle just under the hanging hole, leaving a space in the middle. Place the rhinestone in the center of the circle. There should be some space between the rhinestone and the surrounding seashells.
Now add the four seashells that represent the leaves growing out of the stem. You could put them straight out but I think they look better with a slight curve.
Apply the Sand
Check the glue on the disc to make sure it covers the exposed surface. Touch it up, where needed, with the paintbrush - covering any bare areas. If you use all-purpose white glue, it should stay wet long enough to get everything in place.
Apply sand over the exposed glue. Cover all the glue. Excess sand will just sit there and is easy enough to recover for future use. Once the glue is dry, just tilt the compact disc craft until the loose sand pours off. If you did the shell craft over a piece of paper, you can easily recover the sand and pour it back into you sand container.
Twice the Fun
Free hanging CD hangers look better with a design on both sides. To make the other side, just double up on the seashells and use another rhinestone and repeat the pattern. Now as it turns in the air currents you will still see a seashell flower.

Make the Hanger
Use low cost fishing line to make the hanger for the compact disc craft. You can use anything from 4 lb test to 10 lb test. The thinner line doesn't distract you from the CD hanger as much as the thicker stuff. Determine how long you need it to be. I use 18 to 24 inches. It can always be shortened if need be.
Tie the string to the hole so it doesn't slip off. Try using a fishing knot, like you would use to tie lures and hooks to fishing line. If you don't know this knot, any secure knot you know will work. The loop that will go over the ceiling hook, nail, or other item you are going to hang your CD craft from should be 1 to 2 inches long.
Now hang up your compact disc craft. I hang mine from ceiling hooks, usually in corners. I've also used picture hangers to hang them over a doorway. However you decide to enjoy your hand crafted shell craft you are sure to like it. Make another and give it to a friend.
