Pick out a CD/DVD for Your Shell Craft
Use an unwanted CD for this compact disc craft. CDs for crafts can be low cost bought discs you don't mind using, discs that have stopped working or un-solicited promotional CDs received in the mail that you just don't care for.
Drill a Hole for Hanging Your Shell Craft
You'll need to make a hole near the edge of the CD from which to hang the compact disc craft you are making. There are several ways to make the hole but the easiest is with a drill. Use a 1/8" drill bit with a drill press, a hand drill or a rotary tool.
To protect your work surface, hold the part of the CD to be drilled over the edge of the table. You could also place a piece of scrap wood under the CD before drilling the hole.
The hole should be placed about ¼" from the edge of the CD. This hole can also be used as a guide for laying out the seashell and rhinestone design.
Pick Out the Seashells & Accessories
You'll need some seashells and 5 rhinestones for your compact disc craft. Pick out 11 clam style seashells (see the photo). The seashells I used to form the star are different sizes and the rhinestones are all different colors. You can use rhinestones with different colors like I have or make them all your favorite color.
The center seashell that goes over the hole in the CD's center is a bit over an inch in diameter. The star's 5 arms are made with 5 smaller seashells against the center seashell and then 5 bigger seashells outside of them. The rhinestones measure about ¼ inch in diameter.
Try out your seashells and rhinestones on the CD. This will give you a chance to check out the design to make sure you like it. Move the seashells around until you like what you see. Once you have a design that you like, move the design off to the side of the CD, trying to keep everything more or less in the same place in the design.

Apply the Seashells
The fastest way to get this project done is to apply a thin layer of glue to the surface of the compact disc craft. Place the seashells in place following the design. Start with the seashell going over the center hole.
Place the star's arm seashells in place starting with the inner seashells and then the outer ones. Once you have them where you want, place the rhinestones between the arms.
Apply the Sand
Check the glue on the disc to make sure it covers the exposed surface. Touch it up, where needed, with the paintbrush - covering any bare areas. If you use all-purpose white glue, it should stay wet long enough to get everything in place.
Apply sand over the exposed glue. Cover all the glue. Excess sand will just sit there and is easy enough to recover for future use. Once the glue is dry, just tilt the compact disc craft until the loose sand pours off. If you did the shell craft over a piece of paper, you can easily recover the sand and pour it back into you sand container.
Twice the Fun
Free hanging CD hangers look better with a design on both sides. To make the other side, just double up on the seashells and rhinestones and repeat the pattern. Now as the compact disc craft turns in the air currents you will still see a seashell star instead of a blank CD surface.
Make the Hanger
I use fishing line to make the hanger for the compact disc craft. You can use anything from 4 lb test to 10 lb test. The thinner line doesn't distract you from the CD hanger as much as the thicker stuff. Determine how long you need it to be. I use 18 to 24 inches. The line can always be made shorter if you have to later.
Tie the string to the hole so it doesn't slip off. Try using a fishing knot, like you would use to tie lures and hooks to fishing line. If you don't know this knot, any secure knot you know will work. The loop that will go over the ceiling hook, nail, or other item you are going to hang your CD craft from should be 1 to 2 inches long.

Now hang up your compact disc craft. I hang mine from ceiling hooks, usually in corners. I've also used picture hangers to hang them over a doorway. However you decide to enjoy your hand crafted shell craft you are sure to like it. Make another and give it to a friend.
